Leslie A. Lewis-Jack Schlein Professorship in Natural Sciences

We are celebrating the successful first phase of fundraising for the Leslie A. Lewis-Jack Schlein Professorship in Natural Sciences at York College. Drs. Schlein and Lewis have been colleagues at York College since 1973.

The purpose of the Fund: To help recruit and retain outstanding faculty; fund faculty and student research and travel to academic conferences; provide scholarship support, and help pay for MCAT or GRE preparation.

Dr. Leslie A. Lewis: During his 38-year career at York College Dr. Lewis took on many responsibilities including co-coordinator of the Open Admissions program, coordinator of the Biology program and chairman of the Natural Sciences department. He was York’s program director of the National Institutes of Health-sponsored Minority Biomedical Research Support Program (NIH-MBRS), which brought in approximately $20 million in research funds from 1985 through 2000. His cutting edge research positioned dozens of students for MD & Ph.D. programs.

Dr. Jack Schlein: Started at York College in 1971 and taught continuously for 35 years until he retired in 2007. Dr. Schlein still teaches as a part-time adjunct professor of Biology. At York College, he directed many grants, involving science programs for children and teachers. The largest of these programs was the Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA). Dr. Schlein was the Pre-Med mentor to dozens of students.

As we begin the second phase of our effort, our goal is to reach $1 million for the Natural Sciences Endowment. We hope you will join us.

Thank you!
